If you love art and you love flowers we think Smith and Boyd might be just the perfect mix of two for you. It’s a collaboration between photographer Bruce Boys and artist Tharien Smith that managed to encapsulate the beauty of flowers and ice and nature in such a unique way that it would be criminal to just say it’s photos of flowers. It’s art in the purest form and once you see it you’ll immediately want to get some of these photos to hang in your home.
BruceBoyd is a genius self-taught photographer living in Cape Town. Mostof the time he works as a freelance commercial photographer but he’smanaged to get his work showcased in several small exhibitions.
TharienSmith is Bruce’s girlfriend. She’s an artist and a graphicdesigner. She originally graduated from college with a Textile degreebut has spent most of her career working in various differentcreative projects. She has designed furnishing fabrics, ceramictiles, various decorative graphics. Tharien just loves being amulti-skilled artist and creating beautiful things in various forms.
WhatTharien and Bruce managed to create in their collaboration isbeautiful in its simplicity yet showcases the complicated things innature. They spent a year taking pictures of various flowers frozenin big blocks of ice
Accordingto Bruce and Tharien, in the end, their process was to freeze flowersin plastic containers overnight and then photograph at dawn in theclosest pool or stream or even a puddle.
Whenasked why they chose to freeze the flowers they say that ice is justa unique medium:
“We find it fascinating that ice can preserve something andat the same time also enhance or distort the beauty of it. For a fewfleeting moments, we are treated to this preserved beauty, the pastencapsulated perfectly, before the ice melts and flowers wilt. “
